Introduction to the Willow X
The Willow X is a smart garden helper designed to make gardening easier and more efficient. Back in 2022, we first heard about this innovative robot, which was still in its development phase. Now, with its commercial release approaching, we’re taking a fresh look at what the Willow X has to offer.
What Can the Willow X Do?
The Willow X is designed to do much more than just keep the lawn trimmed. Its multifunction arms can pick up fallen leaves or fruit from trees, perform light weeding in flower beds, and vacuum up debris on the patio. With a range of tools and attachments, its capabilities can be extended even further. The robot can even grab drinks to keep everyone refreshed while the family lounges in the sun. At the end of its shift, the Willow X returns to its dock to top up its batteries, ready for the next task.
Features and Specifications
The Willow X has come a long way since its prototype days. It now features a 600-Wh battery that provides up to 8 hours of work time per 3-hour recharge. Wi-Fi is onboard, and 4G can be added as an option. Each of the four wheels has a motor, allowing the robot to power over rough terrain, and each arm can lift up to 3 kg (6.6 lb). The Willow X navigates using depth cameras and internet-enhanced localization, and features front-facing HD cameras and NVIDIA Orin computing power for AI smarts.
Learning and Autonomy
The AI system enables the Willow X to learn and perform light-duty outdoor tasks, including garden maintenance, hauling tools or groceries, and removing abandoned toys from the yard. Users can teach the robot how to complete a task by showing it, and after a few repetitions, it will be able to perform the task autonomously. This process is designed to be as easy as training a puppy, according to Eeve CEO, Wesley Lorrez.
Pre-Order and Availability
The Willow X is available for pre-order now at €8,990 (about US$10,000), with the initial build run limited to 150 units. The company promises to make more system tweaks ahead of delivery to pioneer customers, which is estimated for August/September. Eeve has been working on its garden-bot dream since 2019 and reports that over 3,000 of its robots are now active in the wild.
Conclusion
The Willow X is a significant step towards a future where robots can support independent living and make our lives easier. With its advanced features, autonomy, and ease of use, it’s an exciting development in the world of robotics. As the commercial release approaches, we can expect to see more of what the Willow X can do and how it can benefit gardeners and homeowners alike.
