Unitree has launched a modified version of its B2 quadruped aimed at putting out fires. This robodog is designed to host various use-specific modules, including a powerful water cannon with high-flow capabilities, allowing it to operate in extreme environments. The primary goal of this robot is to scout dangerous environments, reducing the risk to human firefighters.

Capabilities and Modules

The firefighting robot from Unitree can be equipped with surveillance modules to provide live video feeds to remote firefighters, enabling them to assess a situation before going in. Other modules that can be mounted to its back include a robot arm, LiDAR sensors, comms equipment, and a water cannon. The water cannon has a range of up to 60 meters and a high flow rate of 40 liters per second. The hose is attached to the rear, while the business end can be angled up to 85 degrees to suit the fire-quenching need. The system can use water or foam, and the quadruped can automatically uncouple the hose and move on to other tasks without interruption.

Environmental Readiness and Safety Features

The hose module has a high flow rate of 40 liters per second and a range of 60 meters. This module also includes a sprinkler system designed to keep the robot itself cool in extreme environments. The robot is dust- and waterproof, with composite metal materials used for its body, contributing to its readiness for extreme environments. An air-blower unit is also available, which can be used to extinguish forest fires safely by cutting the connection between flames and combustibles.

Improved Mobility and Performance

Unitree has boosted joint performance over a standard B2 by 170%, giving the robodog extra climbing power for tackling obstacles as high as 40 cm and stairs with a 45-degree slant. The fire rescue bot also benefits from a hot-swap battery system for extended use in the field without compromising waterproofing. This allows the robot to operate for longer periods, making it more effective in firefighting missions.

Real-World Deployment and Demonstration

A number of drills and demos have already taken place to prove the robodog’s fire-fighting capabilities, and a pair recently joined the Qingdao Firefighting and Rescue Support Team in an official capacity. Units are now available for sale, making this technology accessible to firefighting teams worldwide.
