Apple Finally Brings Redesigned Mail App to iPads and Macs

Apple’s redesign of the Mail app on iPhones was a welcome change, but it left iPad and Mac users feeling left out. The good news is that the company has finally caught up, releasing the updated Mail app as part of the macOS 15.4 and iPadOS 18.4 developer beta updates.

New Categories: A Game-Changer

The biggest change introduced by the new Mail app is the addition of categories. These categories aim to make it easier to manage your emails by grouping them into four distinct sections:

Primary: Time-Sensitive Emails

This category is for personal messages and time-sensitive content that requires your immediate attention.

Transactions: Confirmation Emails and Receipts

This section is perfect for keeping track of confirmation emails, receipts, and shipping-related alerts.

Updates: Newsletters and Social Media Alerts

All content that you’ve signed up to receive via an email agreement, such as news, newsletters, and social media updates, can be found here.

Promotions: Marketing and Shopping Material

This category includes marketing and shopping material, such as coupons and sales-related notifications.

Time-Sensitive Emails: A Twist

Apple notes that if any of your emails across the last three categories contain time-sensitive details, they will appear in the Primary bracket. Additionally, when you open messages from a specific sender within these three categories, a digest view of messages from that sender opens, similar to social media profiles.

Customization Options

If you’re not a fan of the new categories, you can always disable them and enable the classic list view that shows all your emails in the same order as they landed in your inbox. You can also create your own custom categories to suit your needs.

A Consistent Experience Across Devices

The arrival of the updated Mail experience on iPads and Macs solves a big problem, as iPhone users have had to cope with a different interface for a while now. With this update, you can enjoy a consistent experience across all your devices.

More AI-Powered Features

Mac users can also take advantage of email summaries, smart replies, and priority messages, making the Mail app even more intelligent and user-friendly.

Conclusion

The updated Mail app on iPads and Macs is a welcome change, offering a more organized and streamlined experience. With its new categories and customization options, it’s easier than ever to manage your emails and stay on top of your communication. As the developer and public beta testing comes to an end, we can expect the overhauled Mail experience to be available across the entire mobile and desktop ecosystem soon.
